Joshua 21:10
Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.
Joshua 21:10 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records how the Israelites entered and settled the Promised Land. In chapter 21, the tribes give cities to the Levites, who were set apart for God’s service. This verse names the children of Aaron, from the families of the Kohathites, as the first to receive their cities by lot. The Levites did not receive a large territory like the other tribes. Instead, God commanded that they live in cities with pasturelands throughout Israel (Joshua 21:2-3). This arrangement let them focus on their duties and teaching the people.
Meaning
The Kohathites were one of the three main branches of Levi, descended from Kohath, the second son of Levi. They had a special role in the tabernacle service, being responsible for the care and transportation of the sacred furniture and utensils (Numbers 3:27-32). The “first lot” shows that Aaron’s priestly family received their inheritance before the other Levites. This priority honored their special role in worship and service. Their true inheritance was the Lord Himself (Deuteronomy 10:9).
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 6:54-61 confirms that the sons of Aaron received their dwelling places by lot. This consistency shows God’s faithful care for those who serve Him. The first lot also points to the central place of worship in Israel’s life, as the priests offered sacrifices and mediated between God and the nation. This allocation was a fulfillment of God’s promise to provide for the Levites, and it set a pattern for the rest of the Levitical cities.
Application
Joshua 21:10 reminds us to put spiritual matters first. Just as the Levites were set apart for God’s service, believers are called to dedicate themselves to worship and obedience. We may not serve in a temple, but we can honor God in our daily work and relationships. The Levites’ inheritance teaches that knowing and serving God is more valuable than material wealth. When we seek His kingdom first, we trust Him to provide what we need. Their example encourages us to find our true treasure in a relationship with the Lord.
Reflection
God kept His promise to the Levites, giving them cities and pasturelands. He also keeps His promises to us. The first lot given to Aaron’s family shows that God values those who draw near to Him. We can rest in the assurance that He sees our service and will reward our faithfulness.
