Joshua 21:8

And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

Joshua 21:8 (KJV)

Joshua 21:8 is the summary statement of the chapter that records the distribution of cities to the Levites. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no single territorial inheritance. Instead, they were set apart for religious service as priests, teachers, and caretakers of the tabernacle, and later the temple. The Lord therefore commanded that they be given cities scattered throughout the tribes of Israel, along with surrounding pasturelands for their livestock and needs.

The verse emphasizes that the allocation was made by lot, a God-ordained method for determining decisions and seeking divine guidance. The casting of lots signified that the distribution was directed by God rather than by human preference. The phrase “as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses” points back to the original legislation in Numbers 35:1-8, where God instructed Moses that the Levites were to receive forty-eight cities in total, with their suburbs. The pasturelands extended two thousand cubits from the cities, providing for the Levites’ livestock and needs.

The children of Israel, under Joshua’s leadership, faithfully carried out this command by giving the Levites their designated cities and suburbs. Their willing obedience, giving from their own inheritances without objection, demonstrates faithful compliance with God’s instructions. This event also highlights God’s faithfulness: what He had promised and commanded through Moses was now being fulfilled in the land of Canaan.

The scattering of the Levites among the tribes fulfilled Jacob’s prophecy in Genesis 49:7 that Levi would be divided and scattered in Israel. Yet this scattering was for the spiritual benefit of all the tribes, ensuring that those who taught God’s law were accessible to every community. The chapter concludes by confirming that all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their suburbs (Joshua 21:41), exactly as the Lord had commanded.

  • Obedience to God’s commands: The Israelites’ obedience in giving the cities to the Levites reminds us of the importance of following God’s instructions in our own lives. As believers, we should seek to know and understand God’s will and be obedient to His commands.

  • Service and ministry: The Levites were consecrated for service to God and His people. Similarly, as Christians, we are called to serve and minister to others using the gifts and abilities God has given us. We should be willing to use our talents and resources to further God’s kingdom and bless those around us.

  • Trusting in God’s provision: Just as God provided for the Levites, we can trust that He will provide for our needs as well. We should rely on His wisdom and guidance, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill His promises and take care of His people.

Joshua 21:8 highlights the obedience of the Israelites in carrying out God’s command to allocate cities to the Levites. It reminds us of the importance of obedience, faithful service, and trusting in God’s provision in our own lives as believers.
