Joshua 22:7
Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
Joshua 22:7 (KJV)
Context
In Joshua 22, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh return to their allotted lands east of the Jordan after helping the other tribes conquer the land. This verse highlights Manasseh’s unique division. Moses had given one half of the tribe possession in Bashan, east of the Jordan, as part of the conquest of Og’s kingdom (Deuteronomy 3:13). The other half received its inheritance from Joshua on the west side, among their brethren, as described in Joshua 17:1-18.
Meaning
Joshua sent the western half-tribe to their tents and blessed them. This blessing affirmed their faithful service and their place in Israel. It also showed Joshua’s care for their well-being, recognizing their contribution to the mission. The division of Manasseh did not create division among the tribes. Both halves remained part of the Israelite nation, expected to maintain unity and support one another.
Biblical connections
The eastern tribes had kept the charge of the LORD (Joshua 22:3), and Joshua’s blessing acknowledged their obedience. This act models how leaders should encourage and bless those who serve faithfully. It also points to God’s faithfulness in giving rest to His people, as promised (Joshua 22:4).
Application
Believers today can learn that fulfilling responsibilities matters, and that spiritual leaders’ encouragement is valuable. God’s people may be geographically separated, yet remain united in purpose and worship. God’s promises are sure, and He provides for His people in different places and circumstances.
Reflection
Consider how you can bless and encourage those who have served faithfully. Also reflect on the unity you share with fellow believers, even when distance or circumstances differ.
