Joshua 22:8
And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
Joshua 22:8 (KJV)
Context
After the Israelites conquered the Promised Land, Joshua sent the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh back to their homes east of the Jordan River. These warriors had kept their promise to help their brothers conquer the land west of the river (Joshua 22:1-7). Now Joshua blessed them and told them to return with the wealth they had gained in battle.
Meaning
Joshua listed the spoils: riches, cattle, silver, gold, brass, iron, and much clothing. These were real, valuable goods that God had given through victory. The command to “divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren” was not optional. The warriors were to share what they had received with those who had stayed behind. This sharing showed that the whole nation belonged together, even though the Jordan River separated their lands. The material wealth was not for hoarding but for generous distribution among the community.
Biblical connections
The principle of sharing God’s provision appears throughout Scripture. In 2 Corinthians 8:13-15, Paul urges believers to share so that there is equality, quoting Exodus 16:18 about the manna: those who gathered much did not have too much, and those who gathered little did not have too little. Just as God gave manna to all Israel, He gives resources to His people so they can care for one another. The spoil was not for hoarding but for the good of the whole community. This passage also connects to the broader teaching on stewardship, where believers are encouraged to share with those in need.
Application
Faithful service matters to God. The eastern tribes served alongside their brothers for years, and Joshua recognised their loyalty. In the same way, believers are called to serve faithfully in their families, churches, and workplaces. God sees that service and rewards it. Sharing blessings also builds unity. When we give generously to others, we show that we are one body in Christ. Our money, time, and abilities are tools for strengthening fellow believers. The context of Joshua 22 also shows the importance of maintaining unity and avoiding misunderstandings among the tribes, as seen in the subsequent altar controversy.
Reflection
Every good gift comes from God. The Israelites’ success in battle was due to His presence and guidance. We should thank Him for what we have and remember that He is the source of all blessings. Our true inheritance is not earthly wealth but the promises of God. We are stewards of what He gives, called to use it for His glory and for the good of others. As we share with our brethren, we reflect God’s generous heart and keep the unity of His people.
