Joshua 23:9
For the Lord hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
Joshua 23:9 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 23 records Joshua’s farewell address to Israel, given near the end of his life. After leading the people into the Promised Land, Joshua reminds them of God’s faithfulness and urges them to obey His commandments. This verse is part of that address, spoken after the conquest of the land.
Meaning
The verse declares that the Lord Himself drove out great and strong nations before Israel. The words “hath driven out” and “hath been able to stand” show completed action with ongoing results. Israel’s victories were not by their own strength or military skill but by God’s direct intervention. The nations were powerful, numerous, and fortified, yet God removed them. The emphasis is on divine action: it is the Lord who fought for Israel and fulfilled His promise to give them the land.
Biblical connections
The immediate context in Joshua 23:10-11 shows that because the Lord fights for Israel, they are to be very careful to love the Lord their God. This verse also sets up a warning: if Israel turns away and allies with the remaining nations, the Lord will no longer drive them out (Joshua 23:12-13). Thus, the verse is not merely a historical statement but a call to continued obedience and trust in God’s promises. The same divine power that secured the land also demands covenant faithfulness.
Application
Although this verse specifically addresses the Israelites, there are lessons for us today. We can trust in God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises. Just as God helped the Israelites overcome their enemies, He can help us overcome the challenges and obstacles we face. This reminds us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own abilities and to trust in His protection and guidance. When we face difficulties that seem too great, we remember that the Lord who acted for Israel is the same God who acts for His people now.
Reflection
God’s past faithfulness gives a firm foundation for present trust. The same God who drove out great nations before Israel is able to work in our lives. This should lead us to gratitude and faithful devotion, knowing that He who began a good work will complete it. Let us respond with hearts that love and obey Him, for He is worthy of our wholehearted trust.
