Joshua 24:29
And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Joshua 24:29 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 24 closes the book of Joshua. In this chapter, Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel at Shechem to renew their covenant with God. The phrase “after these things” links this verse directly to that solemn ceremony, where the people promised to serve the Lord. Joshua’s death comes immediately after this covenant renewal, marking the end of his leadership and the close of the book. This event also concludes the generation that entered the Promised Land under his guidance.
Meaning
Joshua is called “the servant of the Lord.” This title is significant. It was used for Moses (Deuteronomy 34:5) and later for David (Psalm 89:20). It points to a life wholly devoted to God’s service. Joshua succeeded Moses and led Israel into the Promised Land. He was known for faithfulness, courage, and obedience. His death at 110 years old is also meaningful. Joseph, from the tribe of Ephraim, also died at 110 (Genesis 50:22). Joshua was from Ephraim (Numbers 13:8). This parallel shows God’s faithfulness across generations. The same age at death reminds us that God honors faithful service in every era.
Biblical connections
Joshua’s death marks the end of the generation that entered the land under his leadership. The next generation would fail to know the Lord and His works (Judges 2:10). This verse sets the stage for the period of the judges. It also points forward to a greater rest. The writer of Hebrews speaks of a rest that remains for God’s people (Hebrews 4:8-9). Joshua could lead Israel into the land, but he could not give them perfect rest. That rest comes through Jesus Christ, who perfectly fulfills the role of servant and leads His people into eternal rest. Joshua’s burial in his inheritance at Timnath-serah (Joshua 24:30) shows that God kept His promise to give land to His people.
Application
Joshua’s death reminds us of the brevity of life. No matter how great or influential a person may be, everyone faces mortality. This truth calls us to live each day dedicated to serving God and fulfilling His purposes. Joshua’s life also shows the importance of leaving a legacy of faithful service. After his death, the responsibility of leadership fell to the next generation. Godly leaders are needed to continue the work of God’s kingdom. We should pray for and encourage such leaders. We can also ask God to help us serve Him faithfully, knowing that our time on earth is limited.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness did not end with Joshua. Even after his departure, God remained committed to His covenant promises and His relationship with Israel. Joshua’s death highlights that God’s work continues beyond any single person. We can trust that God will remain faithful to us, just as He was to Joshua and to Israel. This verse encourages us to serve the Lord wholeheartedly, knowing that our labor in Him is not in vain, and that He will complete the good work He has begun in His people. The same God who was with Joshua will be with us to the end.
