Judges 9:38

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

Judges 9:38 (KJV)

This verse sits within the story of Abimelech, a son of Gideon, who killed his seventy brothers and made himself king over Shechem. The people of Shechem later turned against him. Gaal, son of Ebed, came to the city and stirred up rebellion, mocking Abimelech with proud words. Zebul, the city ruler and a loyal servant of Abimelech, reported Gaal’s speech to the king and set a trap.

Zebul now confronts Gaal directly. He repeats Gaal’s own boastful question, “Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?” and asks where that bold mouth has gone. He points to the army that Gaal had despised and commands him to go out and fight. Zebul’s words expose Gaal’s empty bravado. The man who spoke proudly must now face the reality he mocked.

The failure of Gaal’s uprising shows that human schemes against God’s order do not stand. Scripture repeatedly teaches that pride leads to a fall, as in Proverbs 16:18. Zebul’s challenge also reminds us that words spoken in arrogance will be tested. God uses even flawed leaders like Abimelech to accomplish His purposes, and He brings down the proud in due time.

This verse warns us to guard our speech. Boastful words and contempt for others can return to shame us. Before we criticize leaders or despise people, we should examine our own hearts. God calls us to speak truth with humility and to trust Him rather than our own cleverness. When we are tempted to rebel, we must remember that God sees our motives and will hold us accountable.

Gaal’s story is a sober reminder that pride goes before destruction. Yet the gospel offers a better way: Christ humbled Himself, and those who follow Him learn to serve rather than to boast. Let us ask God to give us a humble spirit and truthful lips, so that our words and actions honor Him and build up His people.
