Lamentations 4:18

They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.

Context

This verse sits within Jeremiah’s poetic lament over Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon. The siege has reached its final, terrifying stage: the enemy hunts the people’s steps, confining them indoors, so that moving through the streets means certain death. The city that once teemed with life has become a trap, and the inhabitants are reduced to prey in their own capital.

Meaning

The second half of the verse declares the end with grim certainty: “our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.” This is not a vague fear but a settled verdict. The days allotted for Judah’s rebellion have run out; the cup of iniquity is full, and God’s longsuffering has reached its limit. The prophetic warnings of earlier years have now become present reality.

Biblical connections

The broader context of Lamentations 4 acknowledges the city’s sins (verse 13), and the following verses describe the pursuers and the capture of the king (verses 19-20). Together they show that this judgment is neither random nor excessive; it is the just outcome of persistent disobedience.

Yet even in this dark moment, the book of Lamentations later points to hope in God’s mercies (Lamentations 3:22-23), reminding readers that judgment is not His final word for those who turn back to Him.
