Leviticus 16:13

And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:

Leviticus 16:13 (KJV)

God gave Moses these instructions for the Day of Atonement, the one day each year when the high priest alone could enter the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle. This was the place where God’s presence dwelt between the cherubim above the mercy seat. The high priest had to follow every detail exactly, because approaching God’s holiness was a matter of life and death.

The high priest took a censer with burning coals and placed incense upon the fire before the LORD. The smoke from the incense formed a cloud that covered the mercy seat, the golden cover of the Ark of the Covenant. Inside the ark lay the tablets of the testimony, the Ten Commandments. The cloud of incense acted as a protective veil, shielding the high priest from the direct, unveiled glory of God. The phrase “that he die not” shows how seriously God regards His own holiness and how dangerous it is for sinful humans to approach Him without His appointed means.

This ritual points forward to Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. Unlike the Levitical priests who had to offer incense and blood repeatedly, Christ entered the true Most Holy Place once for all. He does not rely on a cloud of incense to shield Himself from judgment; rather, He Himself is our covering and propitiation. Through His sacrifice, believers gain access to God’s presence, not by the works of the law, but through faith in Him.

This verse teaches us that God’s mercy and judgment are intertwined. The same ark that held the law was covered by the mercy seat, showing that God’s grace provides a way for His justice to be satisfied. We cannot approach God casually or on our own terms. We must come through the mediator He has provided, Jesus Christ, who covers our sins with His righteousness.

Consider the reverence and obedience required of the high priest. He did not improvise or take shortcuts. His life depended on following God’s precise instructions. How much more should we honor the holiness of God and the gift of access we have through Christ? Let this verse deepen your gratitude for the perfect mediator who has opened the way into God’s presence.
