Luke 19:33
And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
Luke 19:33 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40). Jesus sent two disciples ahead to Bethphage, near the Mount of Olives, telling them they would find a colt tied there and were to bring it to Him for His entry into the city.
As the disciples untied the colt, its owners asked why they were doing so. Their question was natural, since taking another person’s animal without explanation could appear to be theft. Luke alone identifies the questioners as the owners, while Mark 11:5 says only that “certain of them that stood there” spoke. The presence of multiple owners could have made the situation more delicate, for one might consent while another objected.
Meaning
The owners’ question highlights the disciples’ obedience. Jesus had foretold the circumstances, and the disciples proceeded exactly as He instructed, even when challenged. Their response, recorded in Luke 19:34, was simply that “the Lord hath need of him.” This answer, which Jesus had directed them to give, satisfied the owners, and they let the colt go.
The title “the Lord” was one by which Jesus was known, and His authority over the situation is evident. Christ, who has the hearts of all people in His hands, disposed these owners to release the colt freely and quietly. The verse thus demonstrates both Jesus’ divine foreknowledge and His sovereign rule over human affairs.
Application
This brief encounter encourages believers to trust and obey the Lord’s instructions, even when circumstances seem uncertain or opposition appears. Just as the disciples carried out Jesus’ word and saw it fulfilled, Christians today can rely on His guidance, knowing that He prepares the way before them.
