Listen to this article

“But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?”

Context:Luke 20:23 is part of a larger narrative in which the religious leaders of Jesus’ time were trying to trap Him with their questions in order to find grounds to accuse Him. In this particular verse, some of the religious leaders asked Jesus a question about paying taxes to Caesar, hoping to put Him in a difficult position.

Jesus’ Discernment:The verse begins with the phrase, “But he perceived their craftiness.” This shows Jesus’ ability to discern the motives and intentions of those who were trying to trap Him. It highlights His wisdom and understanding of human nature. As believers, we can learn from Jesus’ example and seek discernment from the Holy Spirit in dealing with challenging situations and people.

Testing Jesus:The religious leaders were attempting to test Jesus by asking Him whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. They were trying to trap Him into giving an answer that would either alienate Him from the people or lead to his arrest. However, Jesus recognized their ulterior motives and did not fall into their trap. This serves as a reminder that we should be cautious of those who try to test or tempt us with manipulative intentions.

Responding with Wisdom:Jesus’ response to their question was, “Why tempt ye me?” He didn’t give a straightforward answer but instead challenged their motives. This teaches us the importance of responding with wisdom and prudence when faced with tricky situations or questions. We should seek to understand the intentions behind the questions and respond in a manner that aligns with truth and righteousness.

Trusting in God’s Guidance:Jesus’ ability to perceive the craftiness of His opponents demonstrates His reliance on God’s guidance and wisdom. As believers, we are encouraged to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in all circumstances, trusting that He will lead us in the right direction. When faced with challenges or temptations, we can turn to God for discernment and understanding.

  • Seek discernment:Ask God for wisdom and discernment to recognize the motives and intentions of others when faced with challenging situations.
  • Guard against manipulation:Be cautious of those who may try to test or tempt you with hidden motives. Stay grounded in your faith and seek to respond wisely.
  • Rely on God’s guidance:Trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, knowing that He will provide discernment and direction in difficult circumstances.

Remember, studying the Bible is an ongoing process, and it is beneficial to explore different translations, consult commentaries, and engage in further study to deepen your understanding of the text.
