Luke 22:12

Listen to this article

“And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.”

Context:The verse is part of the narrative leading up to the Last Supper, where Jesus instructs His disciples to prepare for the Passover meal. This event took place in Jerusalem, during the final days of Jesus’ earthly ministry.

Importance of the Upper Room:Jesus instructs His disciples to find a specific “large upper room” that is already furnished. This detail indicates Jesus’ prior arrangement and knowledge of the room, highlighting His divine foreknowledge and authority.

Symbolism of the Upper Room:The upper room holds symbolic significance in several ways:

– A Place of Preparation: The upper room becomes the setting for the Last Supper, where Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper (communion). It serves as a place of preparation for the significant events that will unfold, including Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection.

– Fellowship and Unity: The gathering of Jesus and His disciples in the upper room demonstrates the close fellowship they shared. It symbolizes the unity and community among believers and emphasizes the importance of gathering together for worship, instruction, and sharing in the Lord’s Supper.

– A New Covenant: The Last Supper marks the establishment of the new covenant through Jesus’ sacrifice. By sharing the Passover meal, Jesus foreshadows His upcoming sacrifice, where He becomes the sacrificial Lamb, providing salvation and forgiveness for all who believe in Him.

Obedience and Trust:The disciples were instructed to “make ready” the room. This demonstrates their obedience and trust in following Jesus’ instructions. It teaches us the importance of being responsive to God’s guidance and carrying out His instructions in our lives, even when we don’t fully understand the purpose or outcome.

  • Trusting God’s Provision:Just as Jesus provided the upper room for His disciples, we can trust that God will provide for our needs as we faithfully follow Him. He is aware of our circumstances and goes before us to make necessary arrangements.
  • Preparation for Worship and Service:Like the disciples preparing the upper room, we are called to prepare our hearts for worship and service. This involves seeking God’s guidance, studying His Word, and being open to His leading in our lives.
  • Unity and Fellowship:The upper room serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and fellowship among believers. We are called to gather together, support one another, and partake in the Lord’s Supper as a symbol of our shared faith in Jesus Christ.
