Luke 22:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:38
Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.”

Context:The events leading up to this verse involve Jesus sending Peter and John to make preparations for the Passover meal (Luke 22:8-9). They were to enter Jerusalem and locate a man carrying a water pitcher who would guide them to the designated house.

Symbolism:The presence of a man carrying a water pitcher would have been unusual during that time because this task was typically performed by women. This specificity suggests that Jesus had made prior arrangements and that this man’s identity was known to Him. By mentioning this, Jesus highlights the significance of this particular encounter and distinguishes it from the ordinary.

Divine Guidance:Jesus’ foreknowledge and precise instructions demonstrated His divine knowledge and sovereignty. This instance reminds us that God is not only aware of future events but is also involved in orchestrating them for His purposes. Jesus wanted to ensure that His disciples found the right location, and He provided them with detailed instructions for their benefit.

Obedience and Trust:The disciples’ response to Jesus’ instructions would have required faith and obedience. They had to trust in Jesus’ guidance and follow the man with the water pitcher. This serves as a reminder for believers today to trust in God’s leading even when the path may seem unconventional or unclear.

Foreshadowing:The location they were led to was the Upper Room, where the Last Supper took place. This event was significant because it marked the institution of the Lord’s Supper, a sacred observance commemorating Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Therefore, this verse foreshadows the impending events of Jesus’ crucifixion and the establishment of the New Covenant through His sacrifice.
