Luke 24:5

And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

Luke 24:5 (KJV)

Luke 24 opens with the women coming to the tomb early in the morning, carrying spices they had prepared to anoint Jesus’ body. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome arrived to find the stone rolled away from the entrance. When they went inside, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Instead, two men in dazzling apparel appeared beside them. The women, terrified, bowed their faces to the earth, and one of the heavenly messengers spoke the words recorded in Luke 24:5.

The verse begins by describing the women’s fear. This was not merely surprise at an empty tomb; they were in the presence of divine messengers, and the disappearance of Jesus’ body was beyond their expectation. Their response was to bow down their faces to the earth, a posture of reverence, humility, and submission before the holy. This physical act acknowledged that they stood in the presence of something greater than themselves.

The angels then asked a rhetorical question: “Why seek ye the living among the dead?” The question gently corrected the women’s expectation. They had come to honor a dead body, but Jesus was not there. The phrase “the living” points directly to the reality of the resurrection. Seeking the risen Christ in a tomb was futile, because death could not hold Him. The question redirected their focus from the place of death to the truth of His life.

The women’s fear and prostration echo a familiar biblical response to divine presence. At the Transfiguration, the disciples fell on their faces when they heard the voice of God (Matthew 17:6). In both cases, awe before the holy leads to humble worship. The angels’ question also called the women to remember what Jesus had already told them about His death and resurrection. Their devotion was sincere, but their understanding was incomplete until the messengers corrected them.

This verse challenges every believer to examine where they are seeking life. Are we looking for purpose, hope, and fulfillment in things that are temporary and empty? The angels’ question exposes the foolishness of searching for the living among the dead. True life is found only in Jesus Christ, who conquered death and offers eternal life to all who believe. The women’s encounter moved them from confusion to clarity, from sorrow to hope, as they later ran to tell the disciples the good news.

The resurrection is the foundation of Christian hope. The angels’ words remind us that Christ is alive and present with His people. When fear or misunderstanding clouds our vision, the same question calls us back to the risen Savior. We are invited to look beyond the tomb and embrace the living Lord, who turns our grief into joy and our doubt into faith.
