Luke names two high priests, Annas and Caiaphas. According to the Old Testament law, only one man could serve as high priest at a time. By the first century, however, the Roman governor controlled the appointment to this sacred office. Historical records indicate that Valerius Gratus, the Roman governor before Pilate, deposed Annas and later appointed Caiaphas, Annas’s son-in-law, as his successor. Thus, Caiaphas held the official position, while Annas remained a powerful former high priest and head of the priestly family. Luke’s wording reflects this corrupted state of affairs, where the sacred office was torn by political interference and ambition.
Meaning
The phrase “the word of God came unto John” echoes the language used of the Old Testament prophets, indicating that John received a divine commission. John is identified as the son of Zacharias, a priest of the order of Abia, and his mother Elisabeth was a daughter of Aaron, making John of priestly descent.
