Luke 7:36

Listen to this article

“And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to consider the context in which it occurs. This event takes place during Jesus’ ministry when He was gaining popularity among the people. The Pharisees were a religious sect known for their strict adherence to the Jewish law.

A Pharisee’s Invitation:In this verse, we see that one of the Pharisees invites Jesus to eat with him in his house. It is noteworthy that the Pharisees were often critical of Jesus and His teachings, but this particular Pharisee extends hospitality to Him.

Jesus’ Acceptance:Despite the Pharisees’ reputation, Jesus accepts the invitation and goes to the Pharisee’s house. Jesus was known for associating with all kinds of people, including tax collectors, sinners, and religious leaders. His willingness to dine with the Pharisee shows His love and acceptance of people from all backgrounds.

The Woman Who Anoints Jesus:The story continues in the subsequent verses (Luke 7:37-50), where we learn about a woman described as a “sinner” who enters the Pharisee’s house. She brings an alabaster box of ointment, weeps, and washes Jesus’ feet with her tears, wiping them with her hair and anointing them with the ointment.

Contrasting Attitudes:As the narrative unfolds, we see contrasting attitudes between the Pharisee and the woman. The Pharisee is critical in his thoughts, questioning Jesus’ identity as a prophet because He allows this woman to touch Him. Meanwhile, the woman demonstrates deep reverence and humility, recognizing Jesus’ authority and expressing her repentance and gratitude.

Jesus’ Teaching:In response to the Pharisee’s thoughts, Jesus tells a parable about forgiveness, highlighting the woman’s actions as evidence of her great love and forgiveness received. He contrasts her genuine repentance and love with the Pharisee’s lack of hospitality and love. Jesus affirms that her sins, though many, are forgiven because of her faith and devotion.

Lessons Learned:This passage teaches several important lessons. It emphasizes Jesus’ willingness to accept invitations from unexpected sources, showing His desire to reach out to all people. It also emphasizes the importance of humility, repentance, and love. The contrast between the woman’s actions and the Pharisee’s attitude reminds us that true righteousness is not found in external appearances or adherence to religious rituals but in a genuine heart transformed by faith and love for God.

In summary, Luke 7:36 introduces an event where a Pharisee invites Jesus to dine with him. This encounter leads to a powerful demonstration of love and forgiveness by a repentant woman, highlighting the importance of humility, repentance, and genuine faith.
