Luke 8:38

Posted on 18 May at 14:41

“Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Luke 8:38 (KJV) says: "Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,"

This verse is part of the account in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus casts out demons from a man who was possessed by a legion of demons. Let’s dive deeper into this passage and explore its meaning.

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the context. In the preceding verses, Jesus encounters a man possessed by many demons in the region of the Gadarenes. Jesus commands the demons to leave the man, and they enter into a herd of pigs that subsequently rush into the sea and drown. The people in the area witness this miraculous event.

The Man’s Request:After the deliverance from demonic possession, the man, now in his right mind, seeks to accompany Jesus. His desire to be with Jesus is a natural response to experiencing such a profound transformation in his life. He wants to stay close to the one who has rescued him.

Jesus’ Response:Surprisingly, Jesus does not allow the man to accompany Him. Instead, He tells him to return to his home and declare what great things God had done for him. Jesus instructs the man to become a witness to the work of God in his life.

Lessons to Learn:a. Witnessing God’s Work: The man’s transformation from being demon-possessed to being free serves as a powerful testimony of God’s deliverance and restoration. Jesus wants him to go back to his community and share what God had done for him. This teaches us the importance of being witnesses to the transformative power of Christ in our lives.

b. Individual Mission: While it might have been desirable for the man to be with Jesus physically, Jesus had a specific mission for him. By sending him back to his hometown, Jesus demonstrates that every believer has a unique role to play in God’s plan. We are called to serve God and impact our immediate surroundings for His glory.

c. Faith and Obedience: The man’s request to be with Jesus shows his faith and devotion. However, Jesus’ command to return home required obedience and trust. This passage highlights the importance of both faith and obedience in our relationship with Christ. Sometimes, Jesus may call us to unexpected places or tasks, and our willingness to obey demonstrates our trust in His plans.

In conclusion, Luke 8:38 reminds us of the transformative power of Christ and our role as witnesses of His work in our lives. It emphasizes the individual mission entrusted to each believer and the need for both faith and obedience.
