Luke 8:39
Returne to thine owne house, and shew how great things God hath done vnto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole citie how great things Iesus had done vnto him. Luke 8:39 (KJV)
Context: Luke 8:39 is part of a larger passage that describes the healing of a demon‑possessed man in the region of the Gadarenes. Jesus cast out the demons from the man, who then desired to follow Jesus. However, Jesus instructed him to go back home and share the great things God had done for him.
Importance of Personal Testimony: One of the key lessons from this verse is the significance of personal testimony. The healed man was not only physically restored but also spiritually transformed. Jesus told him to go back to his own house and share what God had done for him. This instruction reveals the importance of sharing our personal experiences of encountering God’s grace and power with others. Our testimonies can be powerful tools to impact the lives of those around us.
Obedience and God’s Plan: The man’s obedience to Jesus’ command demonstrates trust and submission to God’s plan. Although the man may have wanted to remain with Jesus, he willingly followed the instruction to return home. This teaches us the importance of obedience in our walk with God. Sometimes God’s plan for us may involve going back to our everyday lives and sharing His work in our lives with others.
Spreading the Gospel: The man obeyed Jesus’ command and went on to “publish throughout the whole city” the great things Jesus had done for him. This reveals his enthusiasm and passion for sharing the Gospel message. It reminds us of the Great Commission given by Jesus to all believers, which is to go into all the world and make disciples (Matthew 28:19‑20). We are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ, just as the healed man did.
Impact of Testimony: The man’s testimony reflects his personal transformation and obedience to Christ’s command. While the immediate response of the Gadarenes was fear, his act of sharing his experience remains a model of faithful witness. His testimony likely sparked curiosity, faith, and a desire for others to encounter Jesus. Similarly, when we share our personal testimonies, it can inspire others, leading them to seek God and experience His life‑changing love and grace.
