For hee had one onely daughter about twelue yeeres of age, and she lay a dying. (But as hee went the people thronged him. Luke 8:42 (KJV)

Context: Luke 8:42 is part of a larger passage that recounts two intertwined stories—the healing of the woman with the issue of blood and the raising of Jairus’ daughter. Jairus, a synagogue ruler, approaches Jesus and pleads with Him to come and heal his dying daughter.

The Desperate Father: Jairus, a prominent figure in the local synagogue, faced a dire situation. His only daughter, about twelve years old, lay dying. As a loving father, he sought out Jesus in desperation, believing that Jesus had the power to heal his daughter. Jairus serves as an example of the faith and humility required to approach Jesus for help.

The Interruption: While Jairus was accompanying Jesus to his house, a large crowd pressed in on them. The people were eager to see and be near Jesus, causing a delay in reaching Jairus’ house. This interruption heightened the urgency of the situation, as time was running out for his daughter.

Key Lessons from Luke 8:42

Faith in Jesus’ Power – Jairus believed in Jesus’ ability to heal his daughter. His actions demonstrate the importance of trusting in Jesus’ power to bring healing and restoration in our lives.

Seeking Jesus amidst the Crowds – Despite the pressing crowd, Jairus did not give up or lose hope. He remained persistent in his pursuit of Jesus, recognizing that Jesus was his only hope. This encourages us to seek Jesus diligently, even when circumstances or distractions seem to hinder our progress.

The Value of Time – The delay caused by the thronging crowd intensified Jairus’ anxiety. It reminds us of the importance of making the most of the time we have, especially when facing critical situations. Jairus’ story teaches us not to postpone seeking Jesus but to act promptly.

Jesus’ Compassion and Power – The passage highlights both the compassion and power of Jesus. Though delayed by the crowd, Jesus did not disregard Jairus’ plea. In the following verses He raises Jairus’ daughter from death, demonstrating His authority over life and death.

Application: The story of Jairus encourages us to have faith, persistence, and a sense of urgency when seeking Jesus in times of desperation. It reminds us that Jesus is compassionate and powerful, capable of transforming even the most dire circumstances. As we face our own challenges and trials, let us approach Jesus with unwavering faith, seeking His intervention and trusting in His timing.

Note: The KJV translation of Luke 8:42 uses the phrase “lay a‑dying.” Other translations may render it as “was dying” (ESV, NIV), but the central message and lessons remain the same.
