Mark 13:32

But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

Mark 13:32 (KJV)

This verse is part of the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus teaches about the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the age. He has just told His disciples to learn a lesson from the fig tree and to watch, because they do not know when the time will come. In this setting, Jesus plainly states that no one knows the exact day or hour of these events.

Jesus declares that no man knows that day or hour, and He includes the angels in heaven and even the Son Himself. Only the Father knows. This statement affirms the genuine humanity of Jesus: in His incarnate state, He voluntarily submitted to the Father’s authority and did not exercise His divine omniscience regarding this specific matter. It also highlights the Father’s absolute sovereignty and the mystery of His timing.

This teaching is a clear warning against speculation and date-setting. Because the precise timing is hidden, believers are called to trust in God’s perfect plan and to live in a state of readiness, faithfully fulfilling their duties rather than trying to predict the future.

  • Human Limitations: Jesus acknowledges that as a human being, He does not possess the knowledge of the day and hour of His return. This verse affirms the limitations of His earthly ministry and that His divine knowledge is subject to the Father’s will.

  • The Father’s Sovereignty: By stating that only the Father knows the timing, Jesus highlights the sovereignty and omniscience of God. The Father has complete authority over the unfolding of events, and His plan will be executed in His perfect timing.

  • Implications for Believers: The unknown timing of Jesus’ return serves as a reminder to be watchful and prepared. Jesus urges His followers to be vigilant and faithful, emphasizing readiness rather than speculation.

  • The Mystery of God’s Timing: While signs and prophecies may indicate the general season of Jesus’ return, the precise day and hour remain hidden. This highlights the importance of trust and reliance on God’s wisdom in all aspects of life.

This verse calls believers to a posture of humble dependence on God. Instead of attempting to predict the end times, Christians are to remain faithful in their daily responsibilities, watchful in prayer, and alert to the signs of the times without claiming special revelation. The exclusivity of the Father’s knowledge should produce trust, not anxiety, and a persistent focus on faithful perseverance.

Mark 13:32 conveys a powerful message about the limits of human knowledge and the sovereignty of God. It encourages believers to stay alert and faithfully live out their lives, knowing that God is in control of the future and that His timing is perfect.
