Mark 4:25

For he that hath, to him shall be giuen: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken, euen that which he hath. Mark 4:25 (KJV)

In the surrounding passage Jesus is teaching about faithful stewardship. The verses immediately before (Mark 4:21‑24) use the image of a lamp placed on a stand to show that what is hidden will be revealed, urging believers not to conceal the light of the gospel but to let it shine. Though this teaching follows the Parable of the Sower, it forms a distinct lesson in which Jesus explains the principle of giving and taking.

The statement in Mark 4:25 reflects the biblical principle of stewardship—the responsible management of everything God entrusts to us. This includes not only material possessions but also time, talents, opportunities, and spiritual blessings. The verse makes clear that those who faithfully use and invest what they have been given will be given even more, while those who neglect or misuse their resources will have even what they possess taken away.

Applied to the Christian life, the principle calls us to actively engage with God‑given resources such as the Word of God, prayer, spiritual gifts, and opportunities for service. When we invest these gifts in the advancement of God’s kingdom and the benefit of others, our faith grows and we experience an abundance of spiritual blessings.

Conversely, neglecting these resources leads to spiritual stagnation and loss. Failing to study and meditate on Scripture can cause our understanding to diminish; ignoring the development of our spiritual gifts or refusing to serve deprives us of the joy and fulfillment that come from blessing others.

The verse also underscores accountability. God holds each person responsible for how He has entrusted them, and our faithfulness determines whether we receive more or experience loss. This sober reminder challenges believers to examine how they steward the gifts and opportunities God has placed in their lives, urging a diligent and generous response.
