Mark 6:47
And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
Mark 6:47 (KJV)
Context
This verse follows the feeding of the five thousand, when Jesus immediately constrained His disciples to get into the ship and go before Him to the other side while He sent the multitude away (Mark 6:45-46). After dismissing the crowd, He departed to a mountain to pray. The evening had fully come, and the ship was already in the midst of the sea, while Jesus remained alone on the land.
Meaning
The phrase “when even was come” indicates that it was properly night, not merely dusk. The disciples were in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, about twenty-five or thirty furlongs from shore (John 6:19), which is roughly three to four miles. Jesus was alone on the land, specifically upon the mountain. This stark contrast sets the stage for the miracle that follows: humanly speaking, there was no way for Jesus to reach the ship except by a miracle.
Biblical connections
In biblical imagery, the sea often represents chaos, turmoil, and the unknown. The disciples’ position in the midst of the sea emphasizes their vulnerability and uncertainty, while Jesus’ solitary prayer on the mountain underscores His transcendence over chaos and His role as the source of stability and guidance. The parallel account in John 6:16-17 adds that it was now dark and Jesus had not yet come to them, and that the sea arose because of a great wind. This separation, the toil against the wind, and the darkness all prepare for Jesus’ revelation of His divine power over nature.
Application
Jesus deliberately sent the disciples ahead while He stayed behind to commune with the Father. Such solitude and prayer were characteristic of His ministry, showing His dependence on the Father and reminding us that He is always aware of His followers even when He appears physically distant. The disciples found themselves surrounded by the sea without Jesus physically present—a test of faith and an opportunity for growth. The scene demonstrates the need for the disciples, and for us, to rely on God’s sovereignty and trust that He will provide, even in difficult circumstances.
Reflection
This verse prepares the reader for the subsequent miracle in Mark 6:48-51, where Jesus walks on water and calms the storm. The disciples’ challenging situation becomes the backdrop against which His power and authority over the elements are revealed, reminding us that He can bring calm and order to our lives. Even when we are in the midst of turmoil, Jesus is with us, ready to bring peace and guidance.
