Mark 6:48
“And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.”
Context:The passage is part of the narrative where Jesus feeds the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44) and immediately follows the event where Jesus sends His disciples ahead of Him in a boat while He goes up to a mountain to pray (Mark 6:45-46).
Toiling in Rowing:The disciples encountered difficulty while rowing because the wind was against them. This emphasises their struggle and the challenging circumstances they faced. It also highlights their reliance on their own efforts and the limitations of their human strength.
Fourth Watch of the Night:In Jewish reckoning, the night was divided into four watches, with each watch being approximately three hours long. The fourth watch refers to the period between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. It is important to note that the disciples had been rowing through the night, enduring the storm.
Jesus Walking on Water:In this passage, Jesus comes to the disciples, walking on the sea. This supernatural act demonstrates His divine authority over the elements of nature. By walking on water, Jesus displays His power and reveals Himself to the disciples in a remarkable way.
Would Have Passed by Them:The phrase “would have passed by them” has sparked various interpretations. Some scholars suggest that Jesus intended to walk past the disciples, testing their faith and waiting for them to recognise Him. Others propose that Jesus meant to continue walking to the other side of the sea. However, when the disciples cried out in fear, Jesus responded and comforted them.
Lessons and Spiritual Insights:– Jesus’ presence in our struggles: Despite the disciples’ difficult circumstances, Jesus was aware of their toil and came to them. This serves as a reminder that Jesus is aware of our challenges and is present in the midst of our struggles.
– Divine intervention: Jesus walking on water signifies His power over nature. It illustrates that Jesus can intervene in our lives and circumstances in extraordinary ways, surpassing our human understanding and limitations.
– Faith and fear: The disciples’ fear caused them to cry out. Jesus responded by reassuring them and calming their fears. It highlights the importance of placing our faith in Jesus, even in the face of daunting circumstances.
– Recognising Jesus’ presence: The disciples initially did not recognise Jesus when He came walking on the water. Similarly, we must be attentive and spiritually discerning to perceive God’s presence and intervention in our lives.
