Mark 6:50

Posted on 18 May at 14:47

“For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.”

Context:Mark 6:50 is part of the account of Jesus walking on water, which took place after Jesus had fed the multitude with five loaves of bread and two fish (Mark 6:30-44). After dismissing the crowd, Jesus sent His disciples ahead in a boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee while He went up on a mountain to pray. Later, during the night, Jesus came to His disciples walking on the water.

Fear and Troubled Hearts:When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, they were troubled and filled with fear. It is natural for human beings to experience fear in the face of the unknown or when encountering extraordinary events. The disciples’ reaction is a reminder that even those who were closest to Jesus were not exempt from fear.

Jesus’ Assurance:Upon seeing their fear, Jesus immediately spoke to His disciples, saying, “Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.” Jesus recognized their troubled state and sought to comfort and reassure them. His words were meant to alleviate their fear and anxiety. By identifying Himself (“it is I”), Jesus reminded them of His presence and authority over all things, instilling confidence in them.

Lessons from Mark 6:50:

  • Jesus’ Presence:Jesus assured His disciples that He was with them. Similarly, as believers, we can find comfort in the knowledge that Jesus is always with us, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. We can take courage knowing that we are not alone.
  • Overcoming Fear:Jesus’ words, “Be not afraid,” encourage us to trust in Him and overcome fear. Fear often hinders us from stepping out in faith or obeying God’s commands. However, when we fix our eyes on Jesus and trust in His presence and power, we can overcome fear and walk in faith.

Faith in the Storms:The disciples’ encounter with Jesus walking on water teaches us that faith in Jesus enables us to navigate through the storms of life. When faced with daunting circumstances, we can choose to focus on Jesus, who has authority over every situation. Our faith in Him empowers us to endure and overcome the challenges we encounter.

Application:In our lives today, we may face various forms of fear and uncertainty. However, Mark 6:50 reminds us to turn to Jesus, find comfort in His presence, and trust in His words. Let us remember that Jesus is always with us, ready to calm our troubled hearts, reassure us, and empower us to overcome fear through faith in Him.
