Mark 6:51
“And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.”
Context:This verse is part of the account of Jesus walking on water, which is recorded in Mark 6:45-52. After feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus sent His disciples ahead of Him in a boat while He went up into the mountains to pray.
Jesus’ presence in the storm:In this verse, we see Jesus coming to the disciples who were struggling in the boat amidst strong winds and rough waves. The disciples were amazed when Jesus entered the boat because the moment He stepped in, the wind ceased. This demonstrated Jesus’ authority over nature and His ability to bring calm in the midst of chaos. It is a powerful reminder that Jesus is always present with His followers, even in the storms of life.
The disciples’ response:The verse states that the disciples were “sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.” The disciples were not only astonished by Jesus’ ability to calm the wind, but they were also amazed at the power and authority He displayed. They witnessed a supernatural event that challenged their understanding of who Jesus truly was. This verse highlights the disciples’ growing realization that Jesus was more than just a teacher or prophet. He was the Son of God, with power over creation.
Spiritual lessons:a. Jesus is in control: Just as Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee, He has the power to calm the storms in our lives. When we face challenges, difficulties, or uncertainties, we can trust in His sovereignty and presence. He is in control of all things, and nothing is beyond His reach.
b. Faith in the midst of trials: The disciples’ response shows that they were filled with awe and wonder at Jesus’ power. It serves as a reminder for us to have faith in Jesus, even when we face difficult circumstances. Just as the disciples initially feared for their lives in the storm, we may feel overwhelmed by the storms of life. However, Jesus invites us to have faith and trust in Him, knowing that He can bring peace and stillness to any situation.
c. Recognizing Jesus’ divinity: The disciples’ amazement reveals their growing understanding of Jesus’ divine nature. This event was another step in their journey of recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Similarly, we are called to acknowledge and worship Jesus as Lord, recognizing His authority and power over all things.
Application:
- Trust in Jesus:When faced with trials or uncertainties, remember to place your trust in Jesus. He is the one who can calm the storms in your life and provide you with peace.
- Grow in your understanding of Jesus:Just as the disciples grew in their understanding of Jesus’ divinity, seek to deepen your relationship with Him through prayer, reading the Word of God, and fellowship with other believers. As you spend time with Him, you will come to know Him more intimately.
- Share your amazement:Like the disciples, share your amazement and awe of Jesus’ power and authority with others. Share your testimony of how He has worked in your life, and encourage others to place their faith in Him.
