Matthew 13:49

So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

Matthew 13:49 (KJV)

Matthew 13 contains a series of parables spoken by Jesus, including the parable of the dragnet, which immediately precedes verse 49. In this parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a dragnet cast into the sea that gathers fish of every kind. When the net is full, it is drawn to shore, and the fishermen sit down, collect the good fish into vessels, and throw the bad away. Verse 49 applies that imagery to the end of the age: as the fishermen separate the good from the bad, so at the close of the age the angels will come forth and sever the wicked from among the just.

The verse begins by referring to “the end of the world,” which translates the Greek phrase meaning “the end of the age.” This phrase indicates the culmination of history when God’s purposes will be fully accomplished. It signifies the final stage before the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom, an event associated with the return of Christ and the final judgment.

Jesus states that the angels will play a role in this end-time event. Angels are heavenly beings created by God to serve and carry out His purposes. In this context, they are depicted as instruments of judgment, acting by divine command. They are responsible for separating the wicked from the righteous, distinguishing between those who belong to God’s kingdom and those who do not.

The word “sever” indicates a separation or cutting off. The righteous, or “just,” will be distinguished from the wicked. This separation is decisive and final, signifying the ultimate and eternal destiny of individuals as determined by God’s judgment. The following verse, Matthew 13:50, states that the wicked are cast into the furnace of fire, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.

This verse parallels the explanation of the Parable of the Tares in Matthew 13:41-42, where the Son of Man sends his angels to gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and those who practice lawlessness, and cast them into the furnace of fire. The separation is not a human work but an angelic work at the command of Christ.

Matthew 13:49 prompts believers to live with an eternal perspective. It encourages individuals to pursue righteousness, seek God’s will, and share the good news of salvation with others. It also reminds believers of the urgency to make their relationship with God a priority, knowing that a day of judgment is coming. The mixed state of the world now—where wicked and righteous coexist—will not continue forever; God will bring about a final separation.

This verse highlights the reality of a future judgment, where God will separate the righteous from the wicked. It underscores the importance of living in alignment with God’s will and embracing righteousness. It also serves as a reminder that God’s justice will prevail in the end, and every person will be accountable for their actions and choices.
