Matthew 13:50

And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 13:50 (KJV)

This verse concludes the Parable of the Dragnet, which Jesus told to his disciples in Matthew 13:47-50. In the parable, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea that gathers fish of every kind. When the net is full, the fishermen sort the catch, keeping the good fish and throwing away the bad. Jesus explains that this sorting pictures the end of the age, when angels will separate the wicked from the righteous.

Matthew 13:50 describes the fate of the wicked: they will be cast into the furnace of fire, where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. The furnace of fire is a vivid image of judgment, while wailing and gnashing of teeth expresses anguish, regret, and torment. The verse emphasizes the certainty and seriousness of final judgment and the eternal separation from God that awaits the unrighteous.

The wording of this verse repeats the imagery of Matthew 13:42, which describes the fate of those who cause stumbling and practice lawlessness. The immediate context contrasts the destiny of the wicked with that of the righteous, who will shine as the sun in the kingdom of their Father (Matthew 13:43). This parallel reinforces the certainty of both outcomes.

This verse is a sober warning to take the reality of judgment seriously. It calls readers to repentance and to seek a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. The certainty of separation between good and bad fish urges each person to examine their own life and make choices that align with God’s teachings, so that they may be counted among the righteous rather than face eternal suffering.

The parable reminds us that the kingdom of heaven has both a present and a future dimension. While the net gathers all kinds of people now, the final sorting is certain. This truth invites us to live in light of that coming day, holding firmly to the hope of shining in the Father’s kingdom and taking seriously the warning of the furnace of fire.
