“Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Context:This question was posed to Jesus by a lawyer who was testing Him. To understand the significance of Jesus’ response, let’s examine the broader context of this passage.
In Matthew 22:34-40, the Pharisees had gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, sought to test Jesus by asking Him about the greatest commandment in the law. This was a common topic of debate among religious leaders at the time.
In response to the lawyer’s question, Jesus provides an insightful answer in Matthew 22:37-40:
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Jesus encapsulates the essence of the entire law and the teachings of the prophets with these two commandments. The first commandment, to love God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind, is a call to wholeheartedly devote oneself to God and acknowledge Him as the supreme object of our love, worship, and obedience. It encompasses every aspect of our being and emphasizes the priority of our relationship with God.
The second commandment, to love our neighbour as ourselves, is equally significant. Jesus presents it as inseparable from the first commandment, emphasizing the interconnectedness of love for God and love for others. Our love for God should naturally overflow into love for our fellow human beings, treating them with compassion, kindness, and respect.
By highlighting these two commandments, Jesus reveals that all the law and the teachings of the prophets are built upon the foundation of love. The entire Old Testament law, including the Ten Commandments and the various regulations, is ultimately grounded in the principle of love. Love for God and love for others sum up the entirety of God’s will and provide a framework for righteous living.
As believers, understanding and embracing these commandments are central to our faith. Our relationship with God should be characterized by wholehearted devotion and love, and our interactions with others should be guided by genuine love and care. Jesus teaches that these commandments are not mere suggestions but are essential to fulfilling God’s purpose and experiencing a transformed life.
