Matthew 23:25

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Matthew 23:25 (KJV)

In Matthew 23, Jesus delivers a series of woes to the scribes and Pharisees, the religious leaders of Israel. These warnings target their hypocrisy—their careful attention to outward religious duties while their hearts remain far from God. In this verse, Jesus exposes the contradiction between their public image and their private reality.

The metaphor of cleaning the outside of a cup and platter is vivid and deliberate. The Pharisees meticulously observed ceremonial washings and external rituals, yet Jesus charges that within they are full of extortion and excess. The Greek word translated “extortion” (harpagē) conveys plunder and rapacity, while “excess” (akrasia) suggests lack of self-control. Their outward piety masked inner greed and moral corruption. Jesus’ pronouncement of “woe” is a solemn warning of judgment against such hypocrisy.

The following verse, Matthew 23:26, calls for cleansing the inside of the cup so that the outside may also be clean, showing that true purity must begin within. This direct connection reinforces that God values inner righteousness over external religious performance.

This verse challenges believers to examine their motives. It is not enough to maintain an outward show of righteousness if the heart remains unchanged. True transformation involves a genuine relationship with God that produces integrity in both inward character and outward actions. Jesus desires authenticity, not merely religious appearances.

Consider your own practices of faith. Are there areas where you focus on external observance while neglecting inner purity? The call is to invite God’s grace to transform the heart, so that what is within—your thoughts, desires, and attitudes—becomes clean. Then the outside will naturally reflect the righteousness that God values.
