Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Context

In Matthew 23, Jesus confronts the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy and self-righteousness. He exposes their outward display of religious piety while neglecting the true matters of the heart. This verse is part of a series of rebukes and warnings to these religious leaders, who were known for their meticulous attention to external rituals.

Immediately before this verse, Jesus accuses them of cleaning the outside of the cup and platter while the inside is full of extortion and excess. The imagery of the cup and platter illustrates the contrast between external appearance and internal reality. The cup and platter represent the outward aspects of a person’s life, while what is inside represents their inner thoughts, attitudes, and motives.

Meaning

Jesus addresses the Pharisees as “blind” because they were spiritually blind, unable to see the true nature of their actions and the condition of their hearts. He calls them to “cleanse first that which is within,” emphasizing the need for inner transformation and purity. True righteousness involves a transformation of the heart and genuine sincerity in one’s relationship with God. Merely conforming to outward religious practices without inner change is insufficient.

Jesus states that when the inside is cleansed, the outside will naturally reflect that purity. True transformation will be evident in one’s actions and behavior. Jesus challenges the Pharisees to focus on genuine repentance and righteousness rather than being preoccupied with external rituals.

Application

Matthew 23:26 holds an important lesson for believers today. It reminds us to examine our hearts and motivations, ensuring that our actions align with a sincere desire to honour God. It calls us to seek inward transformation through repentance and the work of the Holy Spirit, leading to a genuine outward expression of our faith.
