For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

False Christs are individuals who claim to be the Messiah, while false prophets claim to speak for God or declare a way of deliverance. The Greek terms used here are ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) and ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), and the verb πλανῆσαι means “to lead astray.” Jesus’ warning is not merely theoretical; throughout history, many have made such claims, deceiving people with counterfeit teachings and apparent miracles. The signs and wonders mentioned are pretended or apparent miracles designed to lead people away from the truth. Their presence does not by itself authenticate a message or a person as being from God.

Biblical connections

This warning parallels Mark 13:22, where Jesus gives nearly identical teaching. The phrase “if it were possible” indicates that while the deception will be powerful and convincing, it is ultimately not possible for the elect to be finally deceived, because they are chosen in Christ unto eternal life and will truly believe in Him.
