Matthew 24:49

And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

Matthew 24:49 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus teaches about the end times and His second coming. In the surrounding parable (Matthew 24:45-51), Jesus contrasts a faithful and wise servant with an evil servant. The evil servant, thinking his master delays his coming, begins to abuse his authority and indulge in sinful behavior.

The phrase “smite his fellowservants” describes oppressive and violent actions toward those under his care. The servant was appointed to manage the household, but instead of fulfilling his duties, he mistreats his fellow servants. “Eating and drinking with the drunken” signifies joining in worldly, self-indulgent behavior, abandoning his responsibilities and compromising his witness.

The parallel passage in Luke 12:45-46 reinforces the same warning, emphasizing that the servant who knows his master’s will but fails to act accordingly will be punished severely. The consequence in Matthew 24:50-51 is that the master will return unexpectedly and assign the unfaithful servant a place with the hypocrites, with weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This verse warns against presumption and abuse of authority. Believers entrusted with responsibilities in the church or God’s kingdom must remain faithful and vigilant, treating others with love and respect rather than domineering or abusive behavior. It also cautions against participating in the sinful patterns of the world, which can compromise our witness and hinder our relationship with God.

Jesus calls His followers to be faithful stewards of the resources and gifts God has entrusted to them. The unfaithful servant’s downfall began with the assumption that his master was delayed. This reminds us to live with readiness and integrity, knowing that Christ will return at an unexpected hour.
