And while they went to buy, the bridegrome came, and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the doore was shut. Matthew 25:10 (KJV)

Context: Matthew 25 is part of the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus teaches about the end times and stresses preparedness and watchfulness. The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matt. 25:1‑13) illustrates these teachings.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins: Jesus tells the story of ten virgins who went out to meet the bridegroom. They took their lamps with them; five were wise and took extra oil, while the other five were foolish and did not. As the bridegroom delayed, all the virgins fell asleep. When the cry was made that the bridegroom was coming, the wise virgins trimmed their lamps and went in with him to the marriage feast. The foolish virgins had to go buy more oil, and while they were away the bridegroom came and shut the door. When they returned they pleaded to enter, but the bridegroom said, “I know you not.”

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:

The Bridegroom represents Jesus Christ, symbolizing His coming and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

The Virgins symbolize believers who profess to follow Christ, representing those within the church or claiming to be followers.

The Lamps represent the outward profession of faith, while the Oil signifies inward spiritual preparation and readiness—specifically the presence of the Holy Spirit, genuine faith, and a true relationship with God. The wise virgins demonstrate spiritual preparedness; the foolish virgins lack this readiness.

The Delay of the bridegroom’s arrival symbolizes the period between Christ’s ascension and His second coming, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance.

The shut door represents the final judgment and the closing of the opportunity for salvation; once closed, it is too late for the unprepared to enter the kingdom.

Lessons and Application:

Be spiritually prepared: The parable underscores the necessity of genuine faith and a personal relationship with God. Believers are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit, grow in spiritual maturity, and remain watchful for Christ’s return.

Be watchful and alert: Just as the virgins fell asleep while waiting, believers may become complacent. We are urged to stay vigilant, live in readiness for Christ’s return, and honor Him in our daily lives.

The urgency of salvation: The parable stresses the critical need to be ready for judgment. It teaches that there will come a time when entry into God’s kingdom is no longer possible, so responding to salvation now is essential.

May we strive to be like the wise virgins, ready to enter the marriage feast with the bridegroom.
