Nehemiah 4:21

“So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.”

Nehemiah 4:21 is part of the narrative in the book of Nehemiah, which recounts the story of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, was granted permission to return to Jerusalem and oversee the reconstruction efforts.

In this particular verse, we find Nehemiah and his fellow workers engaged in the labor of rebuilding the wall. The phrase “So we laboured in the work” emphasizes their commitment and dedication to the task at hand. It demonstrates their resolve to overcome the obstacles they faced in the midst of opposition from neighboring enemies who sought to disrupt their work.

The second part of the verse mentions that half of the workers held spears. This indicates that the builders were not only engaged in construction but also had to be vigilant and ready to defend themselves against potential attacks. The mention of “from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared” highlights the intensity and duration of their effort. They were devoted to their task, working tirelessly from dawn till nightfall, demonstrating their commitment to completing the wall.

This verse portrays the determined spirit of Nehemiah and his team in the face of opposition and adversity.
