Nehemiah 6:6

Wherein was written; It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu sayth it, that thou and the Iewes thinke to rebell: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their King, according to these words. Nehemiah 6:6 (KJV)

The book of Nehemiah provides an account of the efforts made by Nehemiah, a Jewish leader, to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. “There was sent unto me after this manner; Unto Nehemiah the governor, the Jews, and the rest of us that are in Judah, peace be unto you; it is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.”

“Now when Sanballat, and Geshem the Arab, and the rest of the enemies heard that I was set over the Jews, they plotted together to come to Jerusalem, and to do me hurt.”

In this verse, Nehemiah is confronted with false accusations made by his enemies, particularly Gashmu, who claimed that Nehemiah and the Jews were planning to rebel against the king. The purpose of these accusations was to create discord, sow seeds of doubt, and halt the construction of the city walls. In this verse, Nehemiah’s opponents—Sanballat, Geshem the Arab, and other adversaries—are reported to have conspired to travel to Jerusalem with the intent of harming him. Their actions illustrate the hostile environment in which the wall‑building project proceeded.

Nehemiah’s enemies attempted to lure him into compromising his mission. They suggested that if Nehemiah were to meet with them, they could discuss and resolve the accusations. However, Nehemiah discerned their true intentions and recognized their plot to harm him or manipulate him into abandoning the work on the walls.

We need to be discerning, evaluating the motives behind the words spoken to us and recognizing attempts to distract or deter us from God’s purpose for our lives. Nehemiah’s refusal to compromise teaches us the importance of resisting temptation and staying true to our convictions. We may face situations where compromising our faith or integrity seems an easy way out, but we must remain firm in our commitment to God’s calling. Nehemiah’s trust in God’s plan and his unwavering faith are inspiring examples. Despite the opposition, Nehemiah trusted that God would see him through the challenges and bring the work to completion. As believers, we should also trust in God’s faithfulness, even in the face of adversity.
