Numbers 16:46
And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun.
Numbers 16:46 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 16 records the rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram against Moses and Aaron. They challenged God’s appointed leadership, and God’s judgment fell on them. In verse 46, a plague has already begun among the people. Moses urgently commands Aaron to act as high priest and make atonement for the congregation. The plague is a direct consequence of sin, and only atonement can stop it.
Meaning
Aaron must take a censer, put fire from the altar in it, and add incense. The fire must come from the altar, not from common fire. This shows that atonement is made only through the means God has appointed. The word “atonement” means to cover or reconcile sins. Aaron’s action was meant to turn away God’s wrath and restore the relationship between God and His people. The urgency is clear: wrath has gone out from the Lord, and the plague has begun. Aaron’s priestly intercession stands between the living and the dead, stopping the plague.
Biblical connections
Aaron’s role as high priest points forward to Christ, our great High Priest. Aaron used incense and fire from the altar to stop the plague. Christ, however, made atonement for sin once for all through His own sacrifice. He intercedes for His people continually, as Hebrews 7:25 explains. The fire from the altar also reminds us that God’s presence and judgment are holy, and His mercy is the only remedy for sin. The high priest as mediator and the God-ordained sacrifice of incense foreshadow the perfect and final atonement of Christ.
Application
This verse teaches the urgency of intercession in times of crisis. Moses told Aaron to go quickly because the plague was spreading. When we see sin and its consequences around us, we should pray without delay. We can also stand between the living and the dead through prayer, asking God to show mercy. The seriousness of sin is real, but God has provided a way of atonement through Jesus Christ. We must trust God’s appointed means, not human effort.
Intercede quickly when you see danger or judgment.
Trust God’s appointed means of atonement, not human effort.
Remember that Christ’s intercession is perfect and complete.
Reflection
God’s wrath against sin is righteous, but His mercy is also great. He provided a way for the plague to stop through Aaron’s priestly act. Today, we have a greater High Priest who has already made atonement for us. Let us turn to Him in faith, confess our sins, and receive His mercy. We can also follow Aaron’s example by praying urgently for others who are far from God. The hope of mercy is real when we turn to God’s appointed means of atonement.
