Numbers 22:7

And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

Numbers 22:7 (KJV)

The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Torah, records Israel’s journey through the wilderness. At this point, the Israelites have just won victories over nearby nations, and Balak, king of Moab, fears them. In response, he sends a delegation to hire Balaam, a well-known diviner, to curse Israel. This verse describes the beginning of that interaction.

The elders of Moab and Midian, who were princes and nobles, traveled together as a common cause against Israel. They carried “rewards of divination” in their hands, meaning payment for Balaam’s pagan services. This shows they came prepared to pay for a curse, and they delivered Balak’s words to Balaam. The phrase is translated in other versions as “fees for divination” or “payment for the curse,” highlighting that this was a payment for a practice forbidden in Israel.

Divination was a practice forbidden in Israel, contrasting sharply with Israel’s relationship with the LORD. The involvement of both Moab and Midian shows a united human plot against God’s people. Yet this verse sets the stage for God’s sovereign intervention, as He will later confront Balaam and turn his intended curse into blessing. The narrative demonstrates that while human leaders may scheme and offer rewards for curses, God’s purposes cannot be thwarted.

This passage reminds us that human leaders may scheme and offer rewards for curses, but God’s purposes cannot be thwarted. When we face opposition, we can trust that God is in control, even when powerful people unite against us. We should also examine our own motives, ensuring we do not seek spiritual guidance through forbidden means. The contrast between the nations’ reliance on divination and Israel’s relationship with the LORD calls us to depend on God alone.

Consider how you respond to fear and opposition. Balak acted out of fear, relying on divination and payment. As believers, we are called to trust in the LORD, who alone has power to bless and protect. Let this verse encourage you to rest in God’s sovereignty, knowing that no human scheme can stand against His will.
