Numbers 22:8
And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
Numbers 22:8 (KJV)
Context
Balak, king of Moab, saw the Israelites growing strong and feared them. He sent princes to Balaam, a diviner, to curse Israel and weaken it. Balaam told them to stay overnight while he waited for the Lord’s word. The princes obeyed and remained with him.
Meaning
Balaam’s reply shows he would not answer without God’s direction. His words “as the LORD shall speak unto me” reveal that he understood his message must come from God, not from Balak’s wishes. Yet Balaam’s later actions show a divided heart, tempted by reward. This verse warns that seeking God’s will while secretly wanting personal gain can lead to compromise. Even when pressured by influential people, Balaam initially paused to seek divine guidance. His example teaches that waiting on God is the right first step, but it must be paired with a sincere heart. A person can go through the outward motions of seeking God while inwardly hoping for a different answer. Balaam’s story reminds us that God sees the heart and will not be mocked.
Biblical connections
God’s sovereignty appears clearly here. No human plan can stop His purposes for Israel. The same truth appears in Genesis 12:3, where God promises to bless those who bless Abraham’s descendants and curse those who curse them. Balaam’s waiting also echoes the pattern of prophets who sought the Lord before speaking, as seen in 1 Samuel 3:10 when Samuel listened for God’s voice. Throughout Scripture, God guides those who sincerely seek Him, even in complex situations. He is the ultimate authority who speaks and directs, and no scheme of man can thwart His will.
Application
When facing pressure from influential people, believers should pause and pray before acting. God’s guidance comes through His Word, prayer, and wise counsel. Trust that God’s word is reliable and authoritative. Do not alter it to please others or gain advantage. Acknowledge God’s supreme control over every situation and surrender personal plans to His purpose. Examine your motives honestly, asking whether you truly want God’s will or merely His approval for your own desires. The danger of hidden greed is real, and it can twist even sincere-looking obedience.
Seek God’s direction through prayer and Scripture before making decisions.
Trust that God will speak clearly to those who sincerely wait on Him.
Examine your heart for hidden desires that might twist your obedience.
Reflection
Balaam waited for God, but his heart was not fully loyal. True guidance requires more than waiting; it requires a willing spirit. God is faithful to lead those who honestly seek Him, even in complex situations. He can use imperfect people to accomplish His will, but He calls His children to wholehearted trust. As you wait on the Lord, remember that His timing is perfect and His promises never fail. Let your prayer be for a pure heart, not just a clear answer.
