Numbers 24:7
He shall powre the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his King shall be higher then Agag, and his Kingdome shall be exalted. Numbers 24:7 (KJV)
The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In chapter 24 the prophet Balaam delivers a series of oracles concerning Israel, and verse 7 belongs to his final oracle. The language of the verse is rich with symbolic imagery that points to God’s abundant favor.
Symbolism of water
In the verse water is used metaphorically to represent blessings, abundance and prosperity. Just as water is essential for life, the image of pouring water from buckets conveys the idea that God’s blessings will be poured out generously upon His people.
“His seed shall be in many waters”
This phrase suggests that the descendants of the one spoken of will be numerous and will spread over many lands. Within the immediate context it is a promise that Israel will multiply and occupy the territories that God has promised them.
“His king shall be higher than Agag”
Agag was a king of the Amalekites, a longstanding enemy of Israel (see 1 Samuel 15:8). The comparison indicates that the future king of Israel, ultimately the Davidic monarch, will surpass the power and status of Israel’s foes.
“His kingdom shall be exalted”
The statement affirms that the nation of Israel will enjoy a position of honor and greatness among the surrounding peoples. The kingdom will be established, elevated, and recognized for its divine endorsement.
Overall, Numbers 24:7 conveys a powerful blessing over Israel: abundant provision, multiplication of the people, a superior king, and an exalted kingdom. While the immediate promise addressed the Israelite community of the time, many readers also see a foreshadowing of the future Davidic king and, in Christian tradition, its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who establishes an everlasting kingdom.
