Numbers 24:8
God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
Numbers 24:8 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 24 records the prophet Balaam, hired by King Balak to curse Israel, but God turns his words into blessings. This verse is part of Balaam’s fourth oracle, spoken under God’s direct inspiration. It describes Israel’s future strength and victory, not by their own power, but because God fights for them.
Meaning
“God brought him forth out of Egypt” recalls the Exodus, when God delivered Israel from slavery. This shows His faithfulness and power to redeem His people. The “strength of a unicorn” translates the Hebrew word “re’em,” likely a wild ox, a symbol of untamable might. Israel’s strength comes from God, not from themselves. The images of eating up nations, breaking bones, and piercing with arrows describe complete victory over enemies. This points to the conquest of Canaan, where Israel would defeat the nations that opposed them, as God had promised.
Biblical connections
This verse repeats the theme of Numbers 23:22, where God is said to bring Israel out of Egypt with strength. Both verses emphasize that God alone is the source of Israel’s deliverance and power. The victory described here is not merely military; it is the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise to give Israel the land of Canaan. The wild ox imagery also appears in Deuteronomy 33:17, where Joseph’s horns are compared to the re’em, showing that God’s strength is a recurring symbol of His blessing.
Application
For believers today, this verse encourages trust in God’s power to overcome obstacles and enemies. Just as God delivered Israel from Egypt and gave them victory, He is faithful to help His people in their struggles. God’s strength is made perfect in human weakness, so believers can rely on Him rather than on their own abilities. This truth applies to spiritual battles, personal trials, and the challenges of daily life.
Reflection
God’s deliverance is complete and certain. He who brought Israel out of Egypt will also bring His people through every trial. This verse calls us to remember God’s past faithfulness and to trust Him for future victories, knowing that He is the ultimate source of strength and protection. As we face our own enemies, we can rest in the assurance that God’s power is greater than any opposition.
