Numbers 24:6
As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.
Numbers 24:6 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In this passage, Balaam, a prophet who was not an Israelite, speaks a blessing over Israel. He had been hired to curse them, but God compelled him to bless them instead. Standing at Peor, he looked over the camp and delivered this poetic oracle.
Meaning
Balaam uses four comparisons to describe Israel’s blessed condition. Each one shows a different aspect of God’s care.
Valleys spread forth suggest vastness and fruitfulness. A valley is open and wide, able to support many people and crops. The image points to Israel’s growth into a great nation.
Gardens by the river’s side speak of careful cultivation and constant nourishment. A garden beside a river does not depend on uncertain rain; it has a steady supply of water. This pictures God’s faithful provision for His people.
Lign aloes are fragrant trees known for their valuable wood and aromatic resin. The verse says the LORD has planted them. This detail is important: Israel’s beauty and strength do not come from their own effort but from God’s deliberate action. He chose them, placed them, and caused them to flourish.
Cedar trees beside the waters are tall, strong, and long-lived. They stand firm because their roots reach deep moisture. The image conveys stability, endurance, and prosperity.
Biblical connections
The imagery of planting and water appears elsewhere in Scripture. Psalm 1 compares a righteous person to a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaf does not wither. Here, the same picture describes the nation of Israel. The connection reinforces the truth that God is the source of life and fruitfulness for His people.
Application
This verse is not a promise that every believer will have earthly wealth or ease. It is a declaration of God’s sovereign blessing on Israel. Yet it teaches lasting principles about God’s character and His care for His people.
God provides what His people need. Just as a garden by a river has water, God supplies strength and guidance for those who trust Him.
God’s work in our lives is intentional. He plants and nurtures, so we can rely on His purposes rather than our own efforts.
Stability comes from being rooted in God. Like cedars beside the waters, believers can stand firm when their lives are grounded in His Word and His presence.
Reflection
Balaam, who did not belong to Israel, was used by God to pronounce this blessing. This reminds us that God’s plans cannot be stopped by human opposition. He protects and prospers His people according to His will. We can trust that the same God who planted Israel like cedars beside the waters is faithful to care for all who belong to Him through Christ. His blessings are gracious, and His hand is at work in every season of our lives.
