Numbers 33:53
And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.
Numbers 33:53 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the border of Canaan. In this verse, God commands them to dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it. This command comes as they are about to enter the Promised Land, and it is part of God’s larger instruction to drive out the nations and destroy their idols (Numbers 33:52).
Meaning
God had promised Canaan to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob centuries earlier (Genesis 12:7; 13:14-15; 17:8). Numbers 33:53 reaffirms that promise, showing that the land is a gift from God. The command to dispossess is not a call to aggression for power, but a divine mandate to establish a holy nation that worships God alone. By removing the idolatrous nations, Israel would keep their faith pure and avoid false gods. The land is a tangible sign of God’s covenant faithfulness, and their possession of it is a testimony to His power.
Biblical connections
The verse emphasizes both divine provision and human action. God gives the land, but Israel must take possession of it. The surrounding context warns that if they fail to drive out the inhabitants, those left would become “pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides” (Numbers 33:55). This shows that partial obedience leads to ongoing trouble. The command is clear: they are to take possession and live there, involving both divine provision and human action.
Application
God’s promises require active participation and trust. Just as Israel had to act in obedience, believers today are called to receive God’s gifts with gratitude and use them for His purposes. This includes surrendering areas of life that do not align with God’s will, and trusting that He is faithful to fulfill His promises. Obedience to God’s commands is essential, and compromise can lead to ongoing difficulties.
God’s promises are sure, but they often require our faithful response.
Obedience to God’s commands protects us from the consequences of compromise.
God’s provision is tangible, and we can trust Him to meet our needs.
Reflection
Numbers 33:53 reminds us that God is a covenant-keeping God. He gives good gifts, and He calls us to receive them fully. When we obey Him completely, we avoid the thorns that come from half-hearted following. May we trust His provision and walk in faithful obedience, knowing that He who promised is faithful.
