Numbers 35:7

So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.

Numbers 35:7 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. In this chapter, God gives Moses instructions about cities of refuge and the cities for the Levites. The Levites were the tribe set apart for priestly service. Unlike the other tribes, they received no single territory. Instead, God commanded that they be given cities scattered throughout the land.

This verse states the total number of cities for the Levites: forty-eight cities, each with its suburbs. The suburbs were pasturelands around the cities, where the Levites could keep livestock and provide for their families. The number forty-eight included six cities of refuge, which were places where someone who accidentally killed another person could flee for safety. The remaining forty-two cities were for regular dwelling and service.

The command that the cities be given “with their suburbs” shows that God provided not only homes but also the means of livelihood. The Levites depended on these lands for their animals and daily needs. This arrangement allowed them to live among all the tribes and carry out their duties of teaching God’s law, serving in the tabernacle, and helping with worship.

The list of these cities and their assignments to the tribes appears in Joshua 21:10-37. That passage confirms that the promise in Numbers was fulfilled. The principle of giving according to what each tribe had is explained in the next verse, Numbers 35:8. Each tribe was to give cities from its own inheritance, so the burden was shared fairly.

This verse teaches the importance of supporting those who serve God. The Levites could not farm large territories like other tribes, so the community provided for them. Believers today can apply this by caring for those who devote their lives to ministry. This includes financial help, prayer, encouragement, and practical assistance. The whole community shares the responsibility, just as every tribe gave cities.

God’s provision for the Levites also reminds us that He cares for those who serve Him. He did not leave them without homes or food. He gave them places to live and land for their animals. In the same way, believers can trust that God will provide for their needs as they faithfully serve Him. The apostle Paul later wrote about this principle in Philippians 4:19, assuring believers that God supplies every need.

The scattering of the Levites among the tribes meant that worship and instruction in God’s law were accessible to everyone. No tribe was far from a Levite who could teach them. This shows God’s desire for His people to know His ways. It also shows that serving God is not only for a few but touches every part of the community. The Levites’ presence was a constant reminder of God’s holiness and His care for His people.

This verse calls us to consider how we support those who minister to us. It also encourages us to trust in God’s faithful provision. Just as He provided for the Levites, He will provide for His people today. The principle of giving and receiving, of serving and being served, remains central to the life of God’s people.
