Numbers 36:13

These are the commandments and the judgments, which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

Numbers 36:13 (KJV)

This verse closes the book of Numbers. Israel stands in the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan River near Jericho, ready to enter the Promised Land. The location matters because it was here that God gave final laws through Moses before the crossing. The people had been in this place since Balak, king of Moab, first saw them, and from here they would soon move into Canaan.

The words “commandments and judgments” cover both general commands and specific legal decisions. These came from the Lord Himself, not from human invention. Moses served as the chosen mediator, delivering God’s words faithfully to the people. The verse emphasizes divine authority. Every law, from offerings to inheritance rules, carried God’s own weight. The people could trust that these instructions were not arbitrary but designed for their good.

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai to this very spot. Along the way, God guided, disciplined, and provided for His people despite their grumbling and rebellion. This final verse summarizes that whole history of divine care. The laws given here prepared Israel for life in Canaan, including the division of land and cities of refuge. These were practical rules for a nation about to settle in a new home.

Christians are not under the Mosaic Law as a means of salvation, but the principles behind these commands still teach us about God’s holiness, justice, and grace. Obedience to God’s Word remains the path to blessing, while disobedience brings consequences. This verse also reminds us that God always fulfills His promises. He brought Israel to the edge of the land He had pledged to Abraham, and He remains faithful to His word today.

God’s instructions are never random. They reflect His character and His care for His people. As we read the closing words of Numbers, we can trust that the same God who guided Israel through Moses still guides His people through His Word. The verse affirms that these laws were not merely human regulations but divine commandments, given by the Lord Himself through His chosen mediator.
