Numbers 4:31

And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,

Numbers 4:31 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In this chapter, the Lord gives specific instructions about the duties of the Levites, especially the Kohathites. This verse describes the exact items they must carry whenever the tabernacle is moved.

The phrase “the charge of their burden” refers to the particular load assigned to the Kohathites. They were responsible for transporting the most sacred objects of the tabernacle, as listed in Numbers 3:31. This verse focuses on the structural parts: the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets. These were not small or light items. The boards formed the framework, the bars connected them, the pillars supported the structure, and the sockets held the pillars firmly in place. Together they made the tabernacle stable and ready for worship.

This work was part of “all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation.” The Kohathites did not choose their duties; God assigned them. Their service was both comprehensive and divinely ordered. Even the framework of God’s dwelling place was holy and required careful handling. The heavy nature of these items shows that God’s service often involves real effort and responsibility. Each piece had a specific purpose, and God gave precise instructions for how to carry it. This teaches that God cares about the details of our service, not just the outcome.

Numbers 7:8 shows that God provided wagons to help carry the heavier parts of the tabernacle. This reveals His practical care for the workers. He did not leave them without help. The tabernacle itself was a shadow of heavenly things, and its orderly transport points to the order and holiness that surround God’s presence. The careful organization of the Levites serves as a model for believers today, who are called to be faithful stewards of the responsibilities God entrusts to them.

This verse teaches that God cares about details. He gave specific instructions for every board, bar, pillar, and socket. In the same way, He has given each believer a particular charge in His service. No task is too small or too ordinary when it is done for Him. The Kohathites worked together, and their cooperation reminds us that God’s work requires teamwork and unity. Even seemingly mundane tasks in God’s work are significant, and we should serve with diligence and precision.

  • Assigned responsibilities: God gives each person a role, and we should use our gifts faithfully.

  • Reverence and care: We must treat God’s Word, His house, and His work with respect and honour.

  • Teamwork and cooperation: We accomplish God’s purposes when we serve together in unity.

Consider the charge God has placed in your hands. It may seem ordinary, like carrying boards or setting up poles. Yet when done with obedience and care, it becomes holy service. The Kohathites carried the very place where God met His people. Believers today carry the presence of God in their lives. Let us serve with diligence, knowing that even the simplest task in God’s work is significant.
