Obadiah 1:15 (KJV):

The book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, consisting of only one chapter. It focuses on the prophecy concerning the nation of Edom and its impending judgment. Edom was a neighbouring nation to Israel and was descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel). The Edomites had a history of animosity and hostility towards Israel, and Obadiah’s prophecy warns them of the consequences of their actions.

The Day of the LORD:The phrase "the day of the LORD" refers to a significant event or period when God intervenes in human history to execute His judgment and establish His rule. In this verse, the day of the LORD refers to the imminent judgment that will come upon all the heathen nations, including Edom. It emphasises the certainty and proximity of God’s judgment.

Reciprocal Justice:The verse states, "as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee." This principle of reciprocal justice reflects the concept of reaping what you sow. It means that the punishment or consequences of one’s actions will return upon them. Edom, who had acted with hostility and cruelty towards Israel, would now experience the same treatment from their enemies.

Divine Retribution:The phrase "thy reward shall return upon thine own head" underscores the idea of divine retribution. The Edomites would face the consequences of their sinful actions, and the judgment they had inflicted on others would come back upon them. This principle reveals that God is just and will ultimately hold every individual and nation accountable for their deeds.

Application:

• God’s Timing:The verse reminds us that God’s judgment is not arbitrary but follows a divine timetable. We should be aware that God’s justice will eventually prevail, even if it seems delayed. It’s crucial to trust in God’s perfect timing.
• Treat others with kindness:The principle of reciprocal justice encourages us to treat others with kindness, compassion, and fairness. How we treat others can have consequences, and it is essential to demonstrate Christ-like love and forgiveness.
• Accountability:We are reminded of our accountability to God for our actions. Just as Edom faced the consequences of their deeds, we should reflect on our own actions and strive to live in accordance with God’s commands.
• Avoiding a vengeful spirit:While it is natural to desire justice when we are wronged, this verse reminds us that vengeance ultimately belongs to the Lord. We should resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands and trust that God will execute justice in His perfect way and time.
