Obadiah 1:17

Listen to this article

“But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.”

Historical context: The book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament and contains a prophecy against the nation of Edom. The Edomites were descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel). They had been hostile towards the Israelites and rejoiced over their downfall. The book of Obadiah contains a message of judgment against Edom for their pride and mistreatment of Israel, as well as a promise of restoration for Israel.

Mount Zion: In verse 17, “mount Zion” refers to Jerusalem, specifically the hill on which the city of David was built. It symbolises the presence of God and the spiritual centre of Israel. Here, it represents the restoration and ultimate triumph of God’s people.

Deliverance and holiness: The verse states that “upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness.” This points to the future salvation and spiritual renewal of God’s people. It emphasises the idea that God will provide a way of escape and rescue for His faithful ones. Additionally, it highlights the sanctification and consecration of God’s people, who will live in accordance with His holy standards.

Possessing their possessions: The verse concludes with the statement, “the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.” This phrase suggests that the Israelites, representing God’s chosen people, will regain their rightful inheritance and possessions. It speaks of restoration and the fulfilment of God’s promises to His people.

Application and lessons: Obadiah 1:17 carries several lessons for believers today:

  • – Trust in God’s deliverance: Just as God promised deliverance and restoration to Israel, we can trust that He will rescue us from our troubles and provide a way out in His perfect timing.
  • – Pursue holiness: The mention of holiness signifies the importance of living a life set apart for God. As believers, we are called to pursue holiness and conform to God’s standards in our thoughts, words, and actions.
  • – God is the ultimate restorer: The promise of possessing their possessions reminds us that God is the ultimate restorer of what has been lost or taken away. He can restore relationships, opportunities, and blessings that we may have lost, if it aligns with His will.
  • – God keeps His promises: Throughout the book of Obadiah, God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Israel is evident. As believers, we can take comfort in the fact that God is faithful to His promises and will fulfil them in His own time and way.

Obadiah 1:17 provides a message of hope, deliverance, holiness, and restoration. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His people.
