Philemon 1:1

Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

Philemon 1:1 (KJV)

The book of Philemon is a short letter written by the Apostle Paul to Philemon, a Christian residing in Colossae. The letter addresses a specific situation involving a runaway slave named Onesimus, who had become a Christian under Paul’s ministry while Paul was imprisoned. This opening verse establishes the foundation for the rest of the letter, setting a tone of mutual partnership and Christian love before Paul addresses his main purpose.

In this verse, Paul identifies himself as a “prisoner of Jesus Christ.” At the time of writing, Paul was likely in prison, and he acknowledges that his current condition is not due to political or legal circumstances but rather as a result of his commitment and devotion to Christ. Despite his physical confinement, Paul considers himself bound to Christ, serving Him faithfully under the sovereign hand of God.

Paul mentions Timothy, referring to him as his “brother.” Timothy was a close companion and disciple of Paul, often accompanying him on his missionary journeys. By including Timothy in the greeting, Paul highlights the close relationship and partnership they share in the ministry.

Paul addresses the letter specifically to Philemon, whom he refers to as “our dearly beloved and fellowlabourer.” Philemon was a prominent member of the Colossian church and a fellow believer who had been actively involved in serving the Lord alongside Paul. Paul emphasizes his love and appreciation for Philemon, elevating their relationship to one of shared spiritual work.

By calling Philemon a “fellowlabourer,” Paul acknowledges Philemon’s active involvement in spreading the gospel and serving Christ. This term indicates that Philemon was not only a recipient of Paul’s letter but also a dedicated coworker in advancing the kingdom of God.

  • Paul’s self-identification as a prisoner of Jesus Christ reflects his unwavering commitment to Christ, even in difficult circumstances. It serves as an example for believers to remain steadfast in their dedication to Christ, regardless of the challenges they face.

  • The mention of Timothy and Philemon highlights the importance of fellow believers and their active participation in the work of God. Just as Paul recognized and appreciated the support of his companions, we should value and encourage one another in our service to the Lord.

  • Paul’s words of endearment toward Philemon demonstrate the importance of love and respect within the Christian community. Genuine love and appreciation for one another strengthen relationships and foster unity in the body of Christ.

Overall, this verse sets the stage for Paul’s plea to Philemon concerning Onesimus, and it conveys important principles for believers, such as devotion to Christ, partnership in ministry, and the significance of love and respect in Christian relationships.
