Proverbs 10:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

It is as a sport to a foole to doe mischiefe: but a man of vnderstanding hath wisedome. Proverbs 10:23 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its collection of wise sayings and teachings on various aspects of life. It offers practical guidance and moral principles to help individuals live wisely and uprightly. Proverbs 10:23 focuses on two contrasting outcomes based on the characters of the wicked and the righteous.

“The fear of the wicked shall be that which kills them; and the desire of the righteous shall be a sure thing.” This phrase refers to the consequences that the wicked bring upon themselves. The word “fear” in this context signifies the dread or terror that the wicked experience. The wicked often engage in sinful actions, disregarding moral principles and God’s commands. They may instill fear or harm in others, thinking they can act with impunity. However, Proverbs 10:23 warns that the very fear they inflict on others will ultimately come back upon them. Their wickedness and wrongdoing will lead to their downfall and result in their own fear and torment.

In contrast, the righteous are those who fear and reverence God, living in accordance with His principles and commands. The “desire” of the righteous refers to their heartfelt, righteous aspirations and longings. It implies the things that align with God’s will and are in harmony with His character. Proverbs 10:23 assures that the desires of the righteous will be fulfilled reliably. It suggests that God takes pleasure in bringing about the righteous person’s desires because they are aligned with His purposes. This does not mean that every personal desire of the righteous will be granted, but rather those desires that are aligned with God’s will and honor Him.

This verse serves as a reminder of the principle of retribution or consequences in life. It teaches that actions have repercussions, and those who live wickedly will ultimately face the negative consequences of their actions. On the other hand, the righteous, who walk in obedience to God’s ways, will experience His favor and blessings, including the fulfillment of their righteous desires.
