Proverbs 10:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruite of the wicked to sinne. Proverbs 10:16 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed primarily to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living a godly and righteous life, addressing human behaviour, relationships, and character.

Proverbs 10:16 contrasts the outcomes of the labour of the righteous with the fruit of the wicked. It emphasizes that the choices we make and the way we live have real consequences.

The Labour of the Righteous: The verse states that the labour of the righteous tendeth to life. This means that the efforts of those who live according to God’s principles lead to life—not merely physical existence, but a meaningful, abundant, blessed life in God’s sight. A righteous person’s work—whether in occupation, relationships, or service—is marked by integrity, honesty, and diligence, producing positive outcomes, blessings, and purpose.

The Fruit of the Wicked: In contrast, the fruit of the wicked is sin. “Fruit” denotes the results of the wicked person’s actions and lifestyle. Sin here refers to deeds contrary to God’s will, characterized by disobedience, selfishness, and disregard for others, bringing negative consequences, moral decay, and separation from God’s favour.

Righteous Living: The verse encourages believers to pursue righteousness and godliness in every area of life. It reminds us that our actions matter and that living by God’s principles yields a more fulfilling, purposeful life. Maintaining integrity, honesty, and a diligent work ethic allows our labour to contribute to positive outcomes and bring glory to God.

Consequences of Wickedness: The passage warns that choices have consequences. A life of disobedience, selfish desire, and moral compromise ultimately yields the fruit of sin. It calls for self‑reflection, repentance, and turning away from wickedness, seeking forgiveness and transformation through Christ.

Trusting God’s Wisdom: Proverbs as a whole stresses seeking God’s wisdom rather than relying on our own understanding or pursuing temporary gain through wickedness. Trusting divine wisdom enables choices that lead to life, blessings, and a closer relationship with Him.

Encouragement and Warning: The verse offers encouragement to the righteous, assuring that their labour is not in vain, and a warning to the wicked about the inevitable fruit of sin. It motivates believers to persevere in doing good, even amid challenges, knowing their labour will bear fruit.

In summary, Proverbs 10:16 teaches the stark contrast between the outcomes of the righteous’ labour and the wicked’s fruit. It urges us to pursue righteousness, trust God’s wisdom, and remain mindful of the consequences of our actions, so that we may experience a life filled with purpose, blessings, and deeper fellowship with God.
